Stir-Up Sunday: A Cosy British Tradition Explained

Stir-Up Sunday: A Cosy British Tradition Explained

Nov 17, 2025

As the festive season approaches, there’s one date that quietly marks the start of Christmas preparations: Stir-Up Sunday. It’s the annual moment when kitchens across the UK fill with the scent of spices, dried fruit, and nostalgia, and families gather to make their Christmas pudding together.

What Is Stir-Up Sunday?

Stir-Up Sunday takes place on the last Sunday before Advent, usually falling in late November. The tradition dates back to the Victorian era and begins with a classic line from the Book of Common Prayer: “Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord…” Over time, this little phrase became linked with a different type of stirring: the stirring of Christmas pudding.

It became the unofficial reminder for households to mix their puddings early enough for the flavours to deepen before Christmas Day.

Why Do We Celebrate It?

For many families, it’s less about following strict tradition and more about creating a moment together. Everyone in the household is invited to take a turn stirring the pudding mixture, usually clockwise, while making a wish. Some people even tuck a coin or charm into the bowl for good luck (though most keep it symbolic these days!).

What Goes Into a Traditional Christmas Pudding?

A classic pudding is rich, dense, and full of warming flavours. Most recipes include:

• Dried fruits like raisins, currants, and sultanas
• Mixed peel
Spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg
Suet or butter
Brown sugar
Eggs and breadcrumbs
A splash of brandy or stout

Once mixed, the pudding is steamed for several hours, left to rest, then steamed again on Christmas Day, a true labour of love.

How You Can Celebrate Stir-Up Sunday This Year

You don’t need to be a traditional baker to join in. Stir-Up Sunday can be as simple as:

• Gathering the family for a bit of festive stirring
• Trying a new pudding recipe
Meal-prepping ahead of the holidays
Creating a cosy moment with music, warm drinks, and a bowl of ingredients

Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, it’s a lovely opportunity to pause and enjoy a seasonal ritual that brings people together.
