Pancake Day: History, Traditions, and Tasty Variations

Pancake Day: History, Traditions, and Tasty Variations

Feb 24, 2025

A Brief History of Pancake Day

Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, has deep roots in British history. It marks the last day before Lent—a 40-day period of fasting and reflection leading up to Easter. Historically, it was a time to use up rich ingredients like eggs, milk, and sugar, which were often given up during Lent. This practical need led to the tradition of making pancakes.

The name “Shrove Tuesday” comes from the old English word “shrive,” meaning to confess. It was customary to attend confession before Lent, making Pancake Day not only about feasting but also about spiritual reflection.

One of the most charming traditions linked to Pancake Day is the pancake race. The most famous takes place in Olney, Buckinghamshire, dating back to 1445. According to legend, a woman was so engrossed in making pancakes that she lost track of time and ran to church still flipping her pancake in a frying pan!

Today, this quirky tradition continues, with participants racing while flipping pancakes, combining fun with a nod to history.

Pancake Variations to Try

While classic British pancakes with lemon and sugar are always a hit, there’s a world of pancake possibilities to explore. Why not mix things up this Pancake Day with some delicious variations?

American-Style Fluffy Pancakes

Thicker and fluffier than traditional British pancakes, American-style pancakes are perfect for stacking. Serve them with maple syrup, crispy bacon, or fresh berries for a breakfast-inspired treat. Their light, airy texture comes from using baking powder, giving them a delightful rise.

Crêpes

Originating from France, crêpes are thin and delicate, making them perfect for wrapping around a variety of fillings. Go sweet with Nutella and banana, or savoury with cheese and ham. Crêpes are versatile and can easily transition from breakfast to dessert.

Pannukakku

This Finnish oven-baked pancake is custardy on the inside with a golden, slightly crispy top. It’s typically served warm with fruit, jam, or a sprinkle of sugar, making it a cosy treat perfect for a leisurely catch-up.

Vegan Pancakes

You don’t need eggs or dairy to make delicious pancakes. By using plant-based milk (like almond or oat milk) and a flaxseed or chia seed “egg” substitute, you can create vegan pancakes that are just as fluffy and satisfying. Pair them with fruit compote or vegan chocolate spread for a delightful twist.

Gluten-Free Pancakes

For those with gluten intolerance or simply looking to try something new, gluten-free pancakes are a great option. Using flours like buckwheat, almond, or coconut flour, you can create pancakes that are light, flavourful, and perfect for any topping—sweet or savoury.

Protein Pancakes

Ideal for a post-workout boost, protein pancakes are made by adding protein powder to the batter. They’re filling and energising, perfect for starting the day. Top them with Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit for a nutritious breakfast.
